STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥斝』剖閟ity鈥檚 College of Education is celebrating today [Jan. 30] its designation as a Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading Educator Preparation Program by the Mississippi Department of Education.

Mississippi Department of Education representatives joined 小黄书 College of Education leaders today [Jan. 30] to celebrate the university鈥檚 designation as a Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading鈥疎ducator Preparation Program. The recognition is for鈥痗olleges and universities鈥痶hat have trained professors and teacher candidates in the鈥痵cience鈥痮f鈥痳eading, exemplified a change鈥痮f鈥痠nstructional practices and are ensuring graduates enter a classroom ready to instruct students in structured literacy practices.聽小黄书 is among four Institutions of Higher Learning to receive science of reading designations for the 2025-26 academic year.

To be considered for the prestigious designation, university faculty must demonstrate their science of reading expertise and engagement, including research, presentations, professional development, preservice teacher professional development and community partnerships.

鈥淎ll students in Mississippi deserve strong reading instruction, and that starts with a well-prepared teacher workforce,鈥 said Kristin Javorsky, 小黄书 endowed professor of elementary education. 鈥淲e are honored to receive this award recognizing our faculty鈥檚 commitment to emphasizing reading research and current best practices in our undergraduate and graduate programs of study.鈥

Teresa Jayroe, dean of the College of Education, added, 鈥淭his honor reflects the exceptional work of our faculty and reinforces our commitment to preparing teachers who are ready on day one to deliver strong, science-based reading instruction.鈥
